Every Body Yoga

Jessamyn Stanley doesn’t have the body you’d typically see in an ad for yoga clothes. And that hasn’t kept her from becoming an accomplished yogi. She joins us to talk about how people like her are expanding the world of yoga, which she writes about in “Every Body Yoga: Let Go of Fear, Get On the Mat, Love Your Body” (Workman Publishing).

Jessamyn Stanley on …

… why she uses the word fat to describe herself:

“Fat just means large. It doesn’t mean anything more than that. But when we think of the word fat you’re thinking of stupid. You’re thinking of ugly. I cannot tell you the number of people who have told me like, ‘You’re not fat, you’re beautiful.’ And I’m like, ‘Why can’t I be fat and beautiful.’ … For me, owning the word fat and really taking the bullets out of that particular weapon it is a way to show that I am powerful. I am strong.”
