Overcoming Extreme Adversity

In 2014, Hilaree O’Neill led a team of explorers in an attempt to determine the highest peak in Southeast Asia. She joins us to talk about how depleted supplies, freezing temperatures and internal squabbles fractured the team and nearly cost O’Neill her life.

Hilaree O’Neill on …

…. the dynamics of climbing:

“For sure the first several expeditions I went on I chose to go on all female teams because I found that we talked about absolutely everything. By doing that I just learned a lot more and created a really solid foundation for myself to then be a contributing solid member of a mixed team. I think men sometimes are more put your head down and go forth, and women like to talk about it and really work through problems.”
